PERSUASIVE SPEECH OUTLINE

Specific Purpose : To persuade my audience of the three benefits listening the music that can help students in their study.

Central Idea : The three major benefits listening the music are reducing stress, develop concentration and attention, and improves memory performance.

INTRODUCTION

  1. “Without music, life would be a mistake” said Friedrich Nietzsche.
  1. Music can bring up our moods, tell us a story or even bring us down.
  2. Billy Joel said “I think music in itself is healing. It’s an explosive expression of humanity. It’s something we are all touched by. No matter what culture we’re from, everyone loves music.”
  3. Personally I like many types of music, but I can’t say that I fall in love with a lot of music.
  4. The beautiful thing is, everyone’s taste in music is different so no matter what music you make, you’re likely to find someone who will appreciate it.
  1. Today, I would like to persuade you that listening music can help students in study.
  2. I have done some research on the internet about this topic and I have also interviewed my friends to get some more information.
  3. I stand in front of you today to persuade you that listening music during study give three benefits.
  1. I will begin by sharing how listening music can reduce stress.
  2. Next, I will discuss how listening music can develop concentration and attention.
  3. Lastly, I will examine how listening music can improves memory performance.

(Transition: Now let’s start with the first benefit of listening music.)

BODY

  1. Listening music can reduce stress.
  1. A doctoral thesis from the University of Gothenburg reveals that listening to music every day lowers stress.
  1. The thesis was based on the results of two studies, which showed that people who listened to music also felt positive emotions.
  1. Listening to soothing music that relaxes our body and elevates our mind can significantly reduce how much stress we feel.
  1. Relaxation music helps us connect to our inner peace.
  2. When we quiet our thoughts and feel our source of peace within, it’s like having a stress-proof field around us.
  3. Reducing stress not only makes us feel much better, it can also bring improved health.
  1. Listening to music can help calm us down and put us in a better frame of mind.
  1. If we’re feeling stressed, putting on some calming music while we study could really help.

  1. Listening music can develop concentration and attention.
  1. Easy listening music or relaxing classics improves the duration and intensity of concentration.
  1. When we are listening to music, we are forced to concentrate on what we are hearing particularly if we are training to play a musical instrument.
  2. Over time, this focus will extent to our everyday life.
  3. We will notice that we are concentrating more intently at our study.
  1. Recent research conducted by Dr. Emma Gray, a clinical psychologist who worked on the project with music streaming service Spotify, found that music is best played while studying math.
  1. The research also determined that music with 60 to 70 beats per minute was most effective overall.
  2. According to Dr. Gray’s research, students who took math tests after studying while listening to music scored 12 percent better on average than those students who studied without the benefit of music.
  1. Separate from math, creative art subjects, such as art and drama, are best studied while listening to certain kinds of pop and rock music.
  1.  While in this mindset, our concentration is at its peak and our imagination is stimulated, evoking original thoughts that heighten our creativity.
  1. Dr Emma Gray found we are more likely to perform well academically if we listen to music while we study.
  1. But not just any music. It’s important to choose the right music for the topic we’re studying.
  2. The melody and tone range in music, helped us to study longer and retain more information.

  1. Listening music can improves memory performance.
  1. Regardless of our age, we are sure to be able to remember a song from our childhood.
  1. In fact, many of us can identify with one or more pieces of music from our childhood.
  2. More often than not, when we hear certain songs, it brings up specific memories.
  3. Music has the ability to bring up forgotten memories, giving you the chance to travel down memory lane.
  1. Researchers from Norway’s Sogn Og Fjordane College compared the effects of live, taped and no music on three different groups of people suffering from post-traumatic amnesia or memory loss.
  1. Results showed that when patients listened to live or taped music, two thirds of them showed significantly reduced symptoms of anxiety and enhanced orientation, compared to the group that didn’t listen to music.

  1. Music help us to remember more what we’re studying.
  1. Let’s say, facts or history, when it converts into song, it will be easier to remember.
  2. Music has variety of rhythm and tones that makes it interesting and it will keep in our mind in a long time.
  3. That’s why sometimes we can remember the song or music even though it already 10 years ago.
  4. For example, we remember ABC in our childhood through music. It still keep in our mind until now.

  1. In conclusion, there are three benefits of listening music that can help students in study.
  1. In my speech, I first talked about how listening music can reduce stress.
  2. Then, I talked about how listening music can develop concentration and attention.
  3. Finally, I discussed how listening music can improves memory performance.
